3 MILLION FONKS

AND HOW TO SELL THEM

I didn't set out to build a plush toy. I set out to build a property — one piece of original IP well deep enough to draw upon forever.

Intellectual Property needs certain properties to be true.
Do fonks have what it takes?

What follows is the business case for why this soft, undefined, endlessly reinventable little creature is worth its weight in moon dust (which is more valuable than gold, don’t you know!).

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NEEDS

Defensible Uniqueness

With the fonk we have clear, protectable intellectual property with distinctive visual and narrative identity that can't be easily copied. Its zany, celestial story pulls the audience into a colorful, and delightfully fonked-up world.

FONKS ARE SHOOTING OUT OF THE MOON!

Yup, plainly put, fonks are punching fonkholes in spacetime, fonking up everything. But honestly, it’s more of a big party than a world crisis!

Plus, the plush. The fonk’s unique, patent-pending design of poseable limbs and light, soft construction make it a toy like none other on the shelf.

Moreover, we occupy and command the word “fonk” and all the wordplay it entails for an immersive, interactive ride through the fonkiverse.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NEEDS

Multi-Revenue Stream Potential

From the outset, I saw how the fonk’s spindly little legs cross multiple monetization paths: merchandise, licensing, media, gaming, events, experiences, and all types of collaborations. Brands seek a licensed property that boosts their products by association. Fonks are almost overpowered in their ability to cross-brand, easily assuming the garb of a partner without tarnishing their own delightful, playful counter-identity. Fonks can also assume the throne of their own product lines, attractively commanding innovative and imaginative product experiences.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NEEDS

Scalability Without Brand Dilution

Thanks to its unique design, the fonk effortlessly expands to new categories, geographies, and formats while maintaining what makes it special: its soft, expressive innocence. A fonk is identity-free, mapping to no analog but its own. Because it is anthropomorphic, it feels a little like us, but clearly different: smaller, lighter, more innocent and companionlike. It belongs to the moon, not a country, culture, or language. It doesn’t even belong to its plush form, allowing it to be resized, redefined, and re-imagined without damage.

Settling on interface elements before it looks pretty saves design and engineering cycles.

Plan for Design, Design for Play.

I had something else to bring into the Fonk Party – a party game. Sometimes IP can help IP. I saw an opportunity to cross-brand another property of mine from years before: a set of pun-style wordplay games, which I had first envisioned as a replacement for the disappearing comics and games section of the newspaper. Wordle and NYT came along and filled the gap quite well, but these games still have a different, zanier experience worth giving the world.

Merging the two ideas gave birth to the mythos of fonkholes and fonktrails, and I knew these portals in spacetime would be colorful and gooey. But playing the puzzles needed to be fun, and so the game mechanics had to come first.

I built a puzzle graph and local HTML prototype that allowed me to play it ugly-style, all the while knowing these fonkholes would come along soon enough.

And soon enough is now. Thanks to my first partnership with a fellow, savvy entrepreneurial developer, we are bringing Fonks! into reality.

READY FOR THE WORLD

The hard truth is, one person cannot run a businesses alone. But with the right partnerships, any of these ventures could sell 3 million fonks in no time.

So I’ve packaged up the Fonks for licensing after successfully proving out…
